How Do I Know If I Did My Taxes Right?

Updated: Jul 10

There’s nothing more headache-inducing than taxes. Tax season can be challenging, especially if you're not experienced with handling taxes, and making mistakes can cost you thousands of dollars. Are you concerned you did your taxes incorrectly?

In this article, we’ll provide some ways to check whether you filed your taxes correctly. We hope you did, but here are a few recommendations:

  1. Visit IRS.gov to Start A Compliance Check

If you are worried you made a mistake on your taxes, don’t stress. The IRS offers a way for you to create an online account, which can be done by individuals or businesses.

By visiting IRS.gov, you can start a compliance check to review your tax filings and ensure everything is in order.

Accessing Your IRS Tax Compliance Report

Once you create an online account on IRS.gov, you can download a copy of your tax compliance report. This account allows you to review your tax filings and ensure everything is in order.

The compliance report provides a summary of your compliance status and highlights any potential issues that need attention.

  1. Analyze Your IRS Transcripts

Once you have your IRS transcripts, they will provide detailed information about your tax history. This includes the tax returns you’ve filed, the income you’ve reported, and various activities on your account.

Account transcripts can be particularly useful if you have questions about your tax status. You can see any reports of:

  • Audits

  • CP2000 notices

  • Payment amounts and dates

  • Filing information

  • Penalties charged

  • And other activities on your account transcript

  1. Research Your IRS Online Account for Tax Information

In your online IRS account, you can view tax bills, see payments you’ve made in the past 18 months, and download your transcripts. These transcripts can provide detailed information about your tax history, including the returns you’ve filed, the income you’ve reported, and various activities on your account.

If your transcripts show any unusual activity, such as audits, CP2000 notices, penalty charges, or other account actions, you’ll need to contact the IRS for further clarification and assistance.
